Electronics are among the most expensive and personally important items you’ll move—and also among the easiest to damage when packed carelessly. A cracked screen or a hard drive that won’t boot after moving day is frustrating in ways a broken lamp simply isn’t. A little preparation before you box anything up makes a real difference.
Back Up Your Data Before You Unplug Anything
The first step has nothing to do with boxes or bubble wrap. Before you disconnect a single device, back up your data. Copy important files from laptops, desktops, and tablets to an external hard drive or cloud storage service. Once lost due to physical damage during a move, recovering photos, financial documents, and work files is rarely possible and often very expensive. This step takes at most an hour and protects what’s truly irreplaceable. Keep the backup drive in your car during the move, not on the truck.
Use the Original Packaging When You Can
If you kept the manufacturer’s original boxes for your television, computer monitor, or gaming console, use them. Those boxes were engineered around the specific dimensions and weight distribution of each device, with foam inserts designed to absorb impact. If you’ve already recycled the originals, use snug-fitting cardboard boxes padded with anti-static bubble wrap. Standard bubble wrap can generate static electricity, which harms sensitive components, so it’s worth sourcing the right material before packing day.
Photograph Everything Before Unplugging
Before you start disconnecting your home office setup or entertainment center, take a few photos of how everything is cabled. The arrangement of wires behind a TV or desktop computer can be nearly impossible to recreate from memory three weeks later in a new space. These reference photos save real time during setup. Label each cable with a small piece of tape, noting what device it belongs to—your future self will be grateful.
Handle Batteries and Accessories Carefully
Remove batteries from remotes, portable speakers, and any device with accessible power cells before packing. Batteries can leak in transit and damage whatever else they’re sharing a box with. If you own a printer, remove the ink or toner cartridges and seal them individually in plastic bags to prevent leaks. Pack accessories—stands, mounts, game controllers, and styluses—separately from the devices they belong to, and label them so reassembly is straightforward.
Load Electronics Last, Unload First
On moving day, keep electronics accessible on the truck rather than buried at the back under heavy furniture. Loading them last means they come off first, reducing the time they spend in the back of a moving vehicle exposed to vibration and temperature swings. Utah summers mean the interior of a parked truck can heat up rapidly—minimize the time your devices spend in that environment whenever possible.
